The frame won t show much so you really don t need to use fancy wood. When designing a window awning needs to take into account the style of the building the use of the building and any community or zoning regulations. Create a 2 dimensional square frame and attach an equally sized square frame to it so they share a middle spine. The diagram below.

For each of my window awnings i used 1 1 4 pine board and 2 six foot long 1 2 boards. Purchase 1 inch wide by 6 inches long 2 54 cm wide by 15 24 cm long boards to create the awning frame. The long piece needs to be about 6 wider than your window. Craftsman style window awnings.
