Building Base Cabinets

I made two for drawers and a center cabinet for shelves and doors. Factory drone slave work ha. Next cut 4 facing panels for the front of the cabinet. If you were making several cabinets to be installed side by side you d make a single long base for all of them to sit on now move on to building the drawer box.

For our built ins we needed to build 3 base cabinets. At 24 deep standard base cabinets allow you to bend over and reach in to retrieve anything at the back. Instead of making lots of little bases i like to make 1 big base for all the cabinets that will be next to each other. Just make as many boxes as you like and hook them together.

Add another sheet of 3 4 for the top or use solid wood. To design these i closely examined our kitchen cabinets and just simplified those construction methods.

If doing a 2 4 base for cabinets you do not need to notch out the sides instead they are cut 3 1 2 hotter to allow for the cabinet to sit on top of it. Then cut 4 pieces of 1 by 6 lumber to the same width as the bottom panel for the front back and top brace panels. The runners are mounted underneath the drawer and the bottom must. Also the wider the door the more clearance you ll need in front of the cabinet.

The backs are 1 4 6mm plywood. It s surprisingly easy to build base cabinets. With the frame squared and clamped screw the cleats along the top edges. Make cabinets as wide as you like but remember that the wider the doors the greater the tendency to rack and warp.

Two of them are the same size with outside dimensions at 48 wide 35 tall and 22 deep. Once you ve cut everything assemble all of the panels together using wood glue and secure them with butt joints. The middle cabinet is approximately 79 wide and the same height and depth as the others.
