These filler pieces come in larger sheets so we used the jigsaw to cut them down to the exact width of the gap.
Building built in cabinets.

Next i had to build the cabinet doors.
To build a cabinet start by cutting panels for the bottom and sides out of mdf plywood or another type of laminate.
The materials we used are listed in the shopping list see additional information and.
Because i wanted to build a shaker style door i used a mortise and tenon joint for the cabinet doors.
Finally nail the back panel on the cabinet add the facing panels and install the doors.
You can see in the picture that i am using my table saw to cut the tenon.
That way once the 1 4 back and the 3 4 face frame are attached the cabinet is exactly 24 deep.
Then cut 4 panels out of 1 by 6 lumber for the base panels and top bracers and cut 4 more panels for the face of the cabinet.
Once you ve cut everything assemble all of the panels together using wood glue and secure them with butt joints.
If i m building a cabinet with butt joints a face frame and a back attached directly onto the back of the cabinet not set into dados i cut my sides and shelves at 23 deep.

This was my most favorite part of the project.
This built in bookcases project is made from hardwood plywood 2x6s hardwood boards and standard moldings available at home centers and lumberyards.
Then cut 4 pieces of 1 by 6 lumber to the same width as the bottom panel for the front back and top brace panels.
You ll notice we ve also rubbed away stain to create highlights for an antique look.
We chose birch boards and plywood along with maple moldings and then used a gel stain to give the project a cherry wood appearance four our built in bookcases.
Next cut 4 facing panels for the front of the cabinet.
I just drilled these onto the cabinet using wood.
Since there is nothing to attach these to it s a big blank space i added three blocks of wood to the side of the cabinet.
Once you ve done that secure the top braces and nail the back panel onto the cabinet.

Next glue and screw the bottom panel to the base panels and attach the side panels to the bottom.
